Tuition-Free Colleges

Alice Lloyd College, Pippa Passes, KY: http://www.alc.edu/. Founded in 1923, this four-year liberal arts college with a religious emphasis, provides free tuition for qualified students who are residents of the 108 Appalachian Mountain communities (KY, OH, TN VA, WV). Students must participate in the work study program which involves 10-20 hours per week. There are 600 undergrads. The student faculty ratio is 19:1.
Barclay College, Haviland, KS: http://www.barclaycollege.edu/. Founded 1917, this 4-year bible college has 100 students with a student-faculty ratio of 13:1. All faiths are welcome. Barclay began providing a full-tuition scholarship for all students in the fall of 2007.
Berea College, Berea, KY: http://www.bereau.edu/. Founded in 1855, this largely Christian oriented four-year college gives 1,550 academically promising Appalachian students free tuition and a laptop computer. Students must demonstrate financial need to be admitted. The student faculty ratio is 10:1.
College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, MI: http://www.cofo.edu/. A Christian oriented four-year college that does not allow student use of alcohol or drugs, on or off campus. In lieu of paying tuition, the 1,335 students must work 15 hours/week plus two 40-hour work weeks. The student faculty ratio is 14:1.
Cooper Union, New York, NY: http://www.cooper.edu/. Founded in 1859, this unique four-year school specializes in engineering, art and architecture. Tuition is free regardless of need, given the student is academically qualified. However, room and board are not included. There are 920 undergrads and 50 graduate students. The student faculty ratio is 9:1.
Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, PA: http://www.curtis.edu/. Founded in 1924, Curtis offers tuition free music degrees to 130 undergrads and 30 grads who are gifted musicians. The student faculty ratio is 5:1.
Deep Springs College, Big Pine, CA: http://www.deepsprings.edu/.
Founded 1917, this all-male two-year liberal arts institution is located on a 50,000-acre cattle ranch and alfalfa farm. Its two dozen students work 20+ hours a week. In the past 10 years, 16% of Deep Springs' students transferred to Harvard, 13% to the University of Chicago, 7% to Yale and 7% to Brown. Others went on to Columbia, Oxford, Cornell and Stanford, among others colleges.
Olin College, Needham, MA: http://www.olin.edu/. Founded in 2002, this four-year college grants a bachelor's degree in engineering. Note: Due to the recession, Olin suspended its 100% full-tuition scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic year, replacing it with a 50% tuition scholarship for all students. The student faculty ratio is 7:1.
Saint Louis Christian College, Florissant (MO): http://www.slcc.edu/. At this four-year institution, free tuition is granted to qualified full-time students who live in campus housing and free half tuition for full-time commuters.
Webb Institute, Glen Cove, NY: http://www.webb-institute.edu/. At this four-year college, all students double major in naval architecture and marine engineering. There are 90 undergrads with a student-faculty ratio of 7:1.
The William E. Macaulay Honors College at CUNY, Greater New York City area: http://www.macaulay.cuny.edu/. Established in 2001, this is a collaborative program involving seven CUNY campuses -- Baruch, Brooklyn, City, Hunter, Lehman, Queens and Staten Island. It provides 1,200 students with a full tuition (but not various fees) and a laptop computer. Students must maintain a 3.5 GPA to keep the scholarship.
